Learning Objectives

Expanding the knowledge of microbial ecology and biogeochemical cycles. Knowing the composition and role of the microbial population in different habitats. Knowing the methods and environmental microbiology strategies to acquire analytical skills and understanding of biotechnological processes applied to environmental issues and to safeguarding the environment and manufactures, especially with regard to the biological processes of remediation of water, sediments and contaminated soils.


Detailed Course Content

Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells: bacteria, yeasts, molds, algae and protozoa. The metabolic diversity of microorganisms. Growth and adaptation of microorganisms in natural environments. The cycles of the elements nitrogen, carbon, iron, phosphorus and sulfur. Microrganisms and metals. Microrganisms and environmental compartments: atmosphere, hydrosphere, soil, extreme environments. Interactions between microorganisms and other organisms. Degradation of natural organic compounds. Degradation of organic synthetic compounds. Study methods in environmental microbiology. GM microorganisms and environmental biotechnology. Bioremediation of contaminated sites. Microbiology of biological treatment of waste water processes. Composting of organic waste. Biodeterioration of works of art and biotechnology for their protection.
