Module BIOLOGIA APPLICATA

Academic Year 2023/2024 - Teacher: BARBARA TOMASELLO

Course Structure

Lectures face to face and videos related to the topics covered.

Required Prerequisites

Knowledge of the structure and chemical components of the cell and the biology of eukaryotic cells.

Attendance of Lessons

Class attendance is required, 30% absences are admissible.
The rights of working students and  students with disabilities are protected

Detailed Course Content

1)Cells and microenvironment: tissue formation and tissue microenvironment

-Cell-cell interaction: cell junction types, receptors and adhesion molecules (integrins, cadherins, lectins, etc.).

- The cell matrix of connective tissues: composition, structure and interaction with cells and remodelling.

- Hints on pathologies associated with altered cell adhesion or structure of the extracellular matrix.

2)Tissue maintenance, remodelling and renewal
-Cell proliferation and death: cellular and molecular mechanisms (mitogens, cellular senescence, cell death signals, DNA damage, apoptosis and necrosis)

-Stem cells and nuclear reprogramming. Stem cells: generalities, differentiation potential, types (embryonic, germinal embryonic, foetal, amniotic, adult, induced). Hints on stem cell study techniques and applications.

3) 2d and 3D cellular models
Cell lines, spheroids, organoids and 3D-printing: technological aspects and applications in biological and clinical research.

Learning Assessment

Learning Assessment Procedures

The assessment of the achievement of the course objectives (according to the Dublin descriptors) involves a written and/or oral examination by means of questions concerning the course topics. There will be written midterm test
