Prof. Rosario Pignatello was born in 1963. He took a Laurea degree in Pharmacy in 1985 at the University of Catania (Italy), where he continued his teaching and research.
Since January, 2011 he is Full Professor of Pharmaceutical Technology and Legislation at the local Department of Drug Sciences (formerly Faculty of Pharmacy).
He is the present Dean of the Department of Drug and Health Sciences (DSFS).
Main teaching tasks concern Pharmaceutical Technology & Pharmaceutics, Drug Delivery and Targeting, Pharmaceutical Legislation and Pharmaco-economics, Technology & Legislation of Herbal Medicines and Botanicals, Environmental Legislation.
Member of the Teachers Council of the Research Doctorate (PhD) in Neurosciences, at the University of Catania.
The scientific activity of Prof. Pignatello has been mainly carried out in the Department of Drug Sciences of the University of Catania (Catania, Italy) – Section of Pharmaceutical Technology.
Main research interests include:
- Preparation, physico-chemical characterization and biological evaluation of polymer micro- and nanoparticles as modified drug delivery systems.
- Design, synthesis, physico-chemical characterization, biological evaluation and QSAR studies on lipophilic prodrugs and conjugates (drug-lipoamino acid conjugates).
- Supramolecular Carrier Systems: liposomes, Solid Lipid Nanoparticles (SLN) and Nanostructured Lipid Carriers (NLC) for pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications.
- Synthesis and pharmaceutical applications of novel polymeric biomaterials.
- Calorimetry (DSC) studies on vesicular biomembrane models.
Prof. Pignatello is the main Author of about 190 scientific publications in international Journals and co-author of about 200 among invited lectures, oral and poster contributions to scientific congresses.
