Giulio MANICO'

Assistant Professor of Informatics [INF/01]

Researcher in Physics at the University of Catania since 2002, G. Manicò teaches General Physics in Engineering Degree courses. His research mainly concerns the physical and chemical processes that take place in the interstellar medium.

Graduated in 1993 from the University of Calabria, G. Manicò obtained the title of PhD in Physics in 1998. Since November 2002 he has been a confirmed researcher at the Physics and Astronomy Department of the University of Catania. His research activity mainly concerns the experimental study of the formation of molecules on solid surfaces. G. Manicò is co-editor, together with V. Pirronello and J. Krelowski, of the book "Solid State Astrochemistry"; he is also co-author of various scientific articles published in international journals. Since 1999 G. Manicò has worked for various periods at the Physics Department of Syracuse University (U.S.A.), collaborating on the experiments conducted by V. Pirronello and G. Vidali on the formation of molecules on amorphous and polycrystalline surfaces. In 2007 G. Manicò was invited by Prof. J.L. Lemaire to work with the group led by him at the University of Cergy-Pointoise (France). During his research G. Manicò also collaborated with Ofer Biham of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Jerusalem, Israel), Jacek Krelowski of the Kopernick University of Torun (Torun, Poland) and Francois Dulieu of the University of Cergy-Pointoise (Paris, France). From the academic year 2002-2003 G. Manicò has been a professor of General Physics at the University of Catania. He also held for a few years the course "Modeling in Astrochemistry" for the PhD Degree in Physics at the University of Catania.

The main line of research of G. Manicò concerns the study, above all from an experimental point of view, of the physical and chemical processes that take place in the interstellar medium. The latter has been a very active research field for decades. A significant amount of work has been devoted to the construction of detailed models capable of explaining the abundances of the hundreds of molecules observed. Up to now these models have been mainly based on gas phase reactions. However, the importance of solid particles (dust grains) for the enrichment of species that do not easily form through reactions in the gas phase has recently been increasingly understood. The success of these models crucially depends on the availability of laboratory measurements in the extreme conditions encountered in the interstellar and circumstellar medium. In particular, great importance has been recently given to the experimental study of those chemical reactions that are supposed to occur on the surfaces of interstellar dust grains, by virtue of their catalytic action.

 

G. Manicò is a member of the Sicily Regional Scientific Committee of the Asimov Prize.
