Module TECNOLOGIA DEI PRODOTTI ERBORISTICI E DELLA SALUTE

Knowledge acquired:

Students will acquire a general understanding of the main types of herbal product preparations, the unit operations involved in the formulation of preparations, the materials used, and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). Students will also acquire practical knowledge of selected pharmaceutical compounding preparations, as well as extraction and purification techniques.

Skills acquired:

• Knowledge of herbal product preparations
• Knowledge of the main extraction techniques
• Knowledge of the technological methods required for the preparation of herbal products

According to the provisions of the RDA, Article 12 – University Credits (CFU), within the standard workload of 25 hours of total student commitment corresponding to one credit, the following may be included:

a) 7 hours devoted to lectures or equivalent teaching activities, with the remaining hours dedicated to individual study;

b) At least 12 and no more than 15 hours devoted to classroom exercises or equivalent supervised activities (laboratory work), with the remaining hours dedicated to individual study and independent review and elaboration.

Students may use AI as a tool to support their studies, in compliance with applicable legislation, including regulations concerning copyright and the use of intellectual works, as described in Section 5.1 of the guidelines (https://www.unict.it/it/ateneo/cidia-centro-l%E2%80%99informatica-la-digitalizzazione-e-l%E2%80%99intelligenza-artificiale).

1. The herbal drug (crude drug); initial treatments:
   1a) Extraction preparation techniques;
   1b) Mother tinctures and calculation of residual water content.
2. Powdering techniques.
3. Capsules, powders and granules.
4. Preparation techniques by distillation.
5. Concentration, drying, freeze-drying and spray drying.
6. Aqueous and hydroalcoholic solutions (definition of alcoholic strength; density).
7. Syrups, elixirs, etc.
8. Techniques for the preparation of ointments.
9. Quality of phytogalenic products; titration and standardization.
10. Stability and stabilization of products.
11. Product storage and preservation; basic concepts of packaging materials.
12. Overview of Good Preparation Practices (GPP).
13. Laboratory conduct and safety.
