Learning Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide students with the main knowledge on:

1. Microorganisms and parasites: infection of the host

2. Biological essential features of microorganisms and parasites responsible for human infections

3. The microorganisms and the environment

4. Control of infections

5. Microorganisms and parasites responsible for human infections

6. The diagnostic principles for bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic infections


Course Structure

Traditional lectures, with the support of slides and educational videos of some theoretical-practical

teaching topics.

Should teaching be carried out in mixed mode or remotely, it may be necessary to introduce changes

with respect to previous statements, in line with the programme planned and outlined in the syllabus.


Detailed Course Content

  1. Microorganisms and parasites: Essential characteristics and differences of:
    1. Bacteria
    2. Viruses
    3. Fungi
    4. protozoa and other parasites known to infect humans.

 

2. The pathogenic mechanisms of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and other

Parasites)

 

3. Microorganism-host relationships.

 

4. Infection control

a. Sterilization, disinfection and antisepsis

b. The antimicrobial chemotherapy.

 

5. immune prophylaxis: immune sera and vaccines

 

6. Systematic Bacteriology: taxonomy, main characteristics, pathogenicity, infectious

diseases, possibility of prevention, diagnosis and antibiotic chemotherapy of: Gram positive cocci, Gram negative cocci, Enterobacterales, Gram negative non- Enterobacteriaceae, Gram positive bacilli, Mycobacterium, Vibrio, Helicobacter,spore-forming anaerobic microorganisms, spore-forming aerobic

microorganisms,Spirochetes, Chlamydia.

 

7. Systematic Virology: taxonomy, main characteristics, pathogenicity, infectious

diseases, possibility of prevention, diagnosis and chemotherapy of:

  • DNA viruses (Adenoviridae Herpesviridae, Parvoviridae, Papillomaviridae, Poxviridae) e hepatitis viruses
  • RNA viruses (Orthomyxoviridae, Paramyxoviridae, Picornaviridae, Togaviridae, Coronavirirus, Rotavirus e Retrovirus umani)

 

8. The fungi responsible for mycosis

a. Primary and opportunistic pathogens.

b. Fungi responsible for superficial, subcutaneous and systemic mycosis

9. The main parasites of medical importance:

a. Protozoa

ii. Metazoans (Platyhelminthes and Nematodes)

 

10. The diagnostic principles of bacteria, virus and fungal infections

 

11. Pharmaceutical production and Pharmacopeia

a. Necessarily sterile pharmaceutical preparations

b. Pharmaceutical preparations not necessarily sterile

c. Sterilization applications in the pharmaceutical field: parenteral products and parenteral

products

d. Evaluation of contamination of pharmaceutical products

e. Assessment of microbial contamination of non-sterile products

f. Assay for the determination of bacterial endotoxins (LAL Test)

g. Use of antimicrobial preservatives in pharmaceutical preparations

h. Good preparation of medicines (N.B.P.): environment features, staff, raw materials.

 

12. Food Microbiology

a. Microorganisms in non-fermented and fermented foods.

b. HACCP: General principles and description of HACCP system
