L’attività di ricerca si concentra sulla farmacologia e neurofarmacologia, con particolare attenzione ai meccanismi molecolari e cellulari alla base del dolore cronico e della depressione. Il gruppo vanta una solida competenza nell’ambito della farmacologia molecolare, cellulare e comportamentale, con una consolidata attività di ricerca focalizzata sulla neurofarmacologia dei recettori metabotropici del glutammato (mGluR) nel dolore cronico e nella depressione.

Particolare attenzione è stata dedicata alla regolazione epigenetica dell’espressione del recettore mGlu2 nelle regioni cerebrali coinvolte nell’elaborazione del dolore, nonché al potenziale terapeutico della combinazione di approcci epigenetici con i classici ligandi ortosterici. Le attuali attività di ricerca comprendono inoltre lo studio del ruolo di specifici sistemi di neurotrasmissione e bersagli farmacologici coinvolti nella regolazione della funzione neuronale e della percezione del dolore, con l’obiettivo di identificare nuovi bersagli molecolari e strategie terapeutiche innovative. Ulteriori ambiti di interesse riguardano lo studio dei meccanismi neurobiologici alla base delle patologie neurodegenerative e neuropsichiatriche, la caratterizzazione di composti ad attività farmacologica e lo sviluppo di sistemi innovativi per la veicolazione dei farmaci. Nel complesso, l’attività di ricerca integra approcci di farmacologia molecolare, cellulare e comportamentale per approfondire i meccanismi alla base delle patologie e identificare nuovi bersagli terapeutici per le malattie del sistema nervoso.
