Learning Objectives

Deal with the fundamental aspects of General and Inorganic Chemistry in order to facilitate the understanding of issues developed in other Courses. Particular attention is devoted to the main d-block transition elements; chemical properties, structure, reactivity and role of their coordination complexes in biological systems.


Detailed Course Content

Basics of thermodynamics - Thermodynamic systems and state functions. First law of thermodynamics and thermochemistry. Enthalpy. Second law of thermodynamics. Entropy, free energy and chemical phenomena.

Electrochemistry - Electrolytic Conduction. Electrolysis. Faraday’s laws. Galvanic cells and electrolytic cells. Standard electrode potentials. Nernst’s equation.

Chemical Kinetics - Speed ​​and order of a reaction. Activation energy and the activated complex. Parameters which influence the reaction rate. Arrhenius equation. Catalysts.

Transition elements - Electronic structure and main chemical properties.

Coordination compounds - Structure of coordination compounds. Nomenclature. Coordination bond. Coordination number and geometries. Main classes. Crystal field theory and molecular orbital theory. Electronic structure and reactivity. Substitution reactions and electron transfer.

Metals in biological systems - Average composition of the elements in the human body. Essential elements. Biological functions of inorganic elements and classification of metal-biomolecules.
